Self Care & Finding Balance

“Self-care is never a selfish act – it is simply good stewardship of the only gift that I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer to others.”  By: Parker Palmer

Okay, I’m going to put myself out there…I am at that golden age - retirement!   My husband, Pat and I, have been married for 46 years!  We are blessed with 12 grandchildren, spanning 25 years to 3 months of age.

Biggest - Bailey (25 yrs.) - Baby - Jordan (3 months)

Having a yoga practice, has allowed me to continue to play on the floor with the “littles” of my grandbabies.  Pat is an avid exerciser (golf, running, hiking, etc.), yet finds it difficult to sit on the floor comfortably.  We talk about this – he wants to be more flexible, and we both want to be able to play on the floor with our grandchildren for years to come!  This is important to us.

What can we do?  I came across a video by Dr. Joel (based on information from Kelly & Juliet Starrett from their book, “Built to Move”).  In this video, Dr. Joel talks of the importance of hip mobility for an increased range of motion.  His prescription, get on the floor, every day.  Dr. Joel talks about how easy it is in our society today to sit…in cars, comfy chairs, couches and never get on the floor.  He suggests taking one “daily activity” and doing it on the floor (plus gives a few stretches while on the floor to increase hip flexibility).  Dr. Joel points to children who so easily spend lots of time on the floor…on their bellies, sitting, sometimes on their knees, etc.!  They make it look so, so easy & fun!  😊

What are we doing?

Pat and I, agree that Dr. Joel’s ideas are that of common sense…to increase hip mobility/flexibility – just get on the floor!  So, we have committed to having our morning coffee on the floor.  This daily ritual of beginning our day with one another, enjoying coffee as a couple, has been a blessing in our marriage!  Now, we are doing it on the floor!  We began incorporating “coffee on the floor” two weeks ago.  Already, even after this short period of time, Pat’s legs/hips have loosened, and he is more comfortable on the floor.  I’ve noticed a difference/a loosening in my body, too!

Note:  Self-Care doesn’t just happen – we make it happen!  Are you in the role of taking care of others…elders, a busy household of husband/children, at your place of work, etc.? Are you looking for ways to find balance in your life?
